New books

Hello there! It’s been a somewhat hectic and busy weekend so I didn’t get to posting this Sunday, sorry for that! Nothing too much new has been going on however, so it’s not like I’m behind on any updates. The only 2 noteworthy things are that I’ve been drawing a bit more full body pictures and that I treated myself on 4 new books, yay me!

Tales of Beedle the Bard I’ve already nearly completed, but it’s a quick and light read so understandable. I love the cover btw, it’s a lovely design. Then since I really liked The fault in our stars and Looking for Alaska I went ahead and got me John Green’s two other books as well. Lastly, The catcher in the rye, because I’ve heard nothing but good about it and figured I might as well give it a shot. You’ll find out my opinion on these on my goodreads as I finish them. If any of the few people who check my blog have suggestions for good books (I’ll go for any genre really) let me know!

Now I’ve got quite a busy week ahead I’m afraid. An exam, some tasks to finish and a Valentine diner, so updates may be a bit slower this week. No worries though, after that I’ll be having a lot more free time and I’ll be able to post more again. I’ll quickly update the goal list as well after this post. Exercising is going really great btw, my condition is definitely improving.

And on a totally unrelated note, I’m still freezing my ass of.

Figure Close Up – Day 1 & 2

Just a quick blog before I head of to bed, I’m busy busy busy! This week is the first of 12 where I take photographs of a certain theme for every day of the week. I chose close up photo’s, but to be a little more specific, close ups from my figurine collection. Mainly because most are rather tiny so I figured it would be interesting to see them from up close, but also because they’re in reach and are quick to do (slightly lazy but hey, the blog title says it all). The plan was to post one each day but I was kinda busy yesterday, so I’m just going to post 2 today instead.

I got the Link one from getting some Chocolate Japanese Kinder Eggs at a convention. There’s actually 12 of them and I have 10, but decided this was the most interesting one to pick. The Sandile one was an (awesome) present from my friend Micha. Both these are about the size of a thumb, keep that in mind. I realize that from a professionals point of view these are probably terrible, but I’ll learn as I go. Tips are always welcome if you’re into photography. See you tomorrow with the 3rd one!

Challenge List – Week 3

Well, this week was fairly productive!

I’ve finished reading The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green, and I can definitely recommend it. It’s not exactly a happy story, but it made me smile a lot so it’s not really a sad story either. It’s hard to explain really, so all I can say is go read it. If you want a longer opinion, check out my goodreads. I’ve also watched True Grit (the 2010 version) and quite liked it. Probably because of The Dude and the fact that I’ve wanted to see a Western for a while. The ending kinda just happens though, it’s over before you realize it. I never saw the original so I can’t tell how it holds up though, but again, I liked it.

My first new band for the year has been “discovered” as well after randomly clicking a suggestion on Youtube. They’re called Said The Whale and their music is very relaxing. I especially like “Lines” which references Back to the Future, so I’ll share that one with you guys.

Art wise, I’ve decided to change one of my challenges again. The Draw a full body drawing every 2 weeks. It’s just too specific and feels a bit forced. Instead I’m changing it to sketching out a few bodies a day to practice my anatomy and poses. I’ve been doing this for the past week and I can feel that this will benefit my art a lot more than just trying 1 finished full body drawing. This has resulted in giving myself more motivation and inspiration to draw on a daily basis and try new things. Obviously that’s a good thing.

As for as my exercises go, I’m improving. As in not tiring out as quickly anymore, which makes me very happy. It might just be in my head, but I do feel more healthy because of it. Also it’s already starting to get a habit to eat a piece of fruit or 2 a day so that’s all good too. And since I messed up with my train last Friday I had plenty of time to try a Coffee Mocha, which tasted great. When it comes to cooking however, oh boy… We tried making cheesecake but that was a total fail. I’m not actually a fan of cheesecake to begin with and neither is Dorothy, but I wanted to make some for my brother. Too bad for him I’m afraid, but we’re not going to give that one a 2nd attempt.

For this week, I plan to do the only drink water (with exception of coffee) so I’m enjoying my sugary Fanta tonight while I still can. Time is also running short on some of my monthly challenges so I’m going to start my first photography challenge and take 7 close up pictures this week. Then there’s also go running twice a month, but I hardly doubt that I’ll manage to do that in this cold, usually rainy weather. Perhaps I’ll catch up on things like that during better weather days. Everything else is going smoothly though, and I’m glad for that.

Lastly, I wouldn’t mind getting some questions on my Formspring, so why not have a go? Besides that, have a good evening!

Challenge List – Week 2

And thus ends the 2nd week of my challenge list. Weekly challenges are going really well, although I should probably start some of those monthly challenges now if I want to make those in time. I’m changing another challenge slightly as well. The do an art challenge every 2 weeks from Deviantart. I’m changing that to doing an art challenge in general, so I’ve got more options. Today I actually did a 100 challenge, which is to pick something I’m bad at, and draw that 100 times. So I drew 100 male torso’s. They’re all roughly 3 minute sketches, but that still took some good time and I feel like I should be doing this 100 thing more, it feels good. Other things I’m doing better at is that so far I’ve been exercising 6 out of 7 days, rather than every 2 and I usually eat 2 pieces of fruit a day instead of one.

I’ve also finished my first book of the year, which was The Hobbit, the illustrated version. I really enjoyed this book and it was a surprisingly easy read, considering how people say that the LotR books are so hard to read (I’ve yet to touch those). Reading the book sort of feels like you’re in a tavern, listening to an old man’s tale. There’s never a dull moment and so much happens that keeps you reading on and on. The illustrations are beautifully done as well and fit the story perfectly, something that people who are into art will definitely appreciate. The only thing I wonder, is why the writer went with 13 Dwarves, as only a few get proper character development. I feel like the same story could have been told with half as many Dwarves. Smaug, the dragon’s defeat was also done in an unexpected way, but these are not bad things of course. I know its kind of pointles to mention, but I’m still going to say that I highly recommend anyone to read it. Now I look forward to the movie even more.

Anyways, here’s the list again with mentioned updates and explanations! This time I’m just going to write the ones that I did since you can find the full thing on the goals page, makes it easier to read through.

Looking at some of the things I did, I should perhaps blog when I complete specific challenges, like giving my thoughts about a new movie I’ve seen. It will make the blog that more active, so I’ll start doing that from now on and it’s possibly I will continue to make little changes to improve as I go. That’s the update for this week, now I’m going to go back to improving this character of mine! Perhaps I’ll post a sneak peak when I’m done, but I’m keeping the majority for the sketchdump at the end of the month. See you in a few days!

A total of 53 may seem a bit random, but that just shows I didn’t make any of these up for the sake off. I just wrote everything that came to mind that I wanted to do and this is what I ended with. I might even do some extra things a long the way if anything comes up. Why am I doing this? Well, the whole point of this list is to become more creative and procrastinate a lot less, but without putting too much pressure on myself. Granted, it looks like a lot, but I don’t have to do all of these, or completely finish them, but it does give me goals to work towards to. Even if I only manage half of what’s on this list, that means I’ll have been a lot more active than any other year. Of course the more I do finish the better and I will do my best, but if something just doesn’t work or ends up being unrealistic, so be it.  Everytime I do something I will update the list, and at the end of each month I’ll be writing a post with an overview of how far I’ve come so far. Wish me luck and I hope you follow me & my challenges, and perhaps make a list for yourself, let me know!

PS: you can find the list and the progress at the top menu bar =)

A look back at 2011

Well folks, it’s the last day of 2011 so you know what that means! Here’s an overview of the good and bad from this year, in no particular order. Also for the people who’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll notice the place suddenly got a lot more colorful. It’s not final yet but I’m on a tight schedule today so I’ll be making some small changes to the layout in the following week still. Hope you like the brighter look, if it’s too much, please do let me know.

THE GOOD

– I finally decided to quit my job after much consideration
– Decided to study Graphic & Webdesign instead, and I’m really happy with that choice
– I no longer feel lost and pulled myself back together again. I now know what want, and need, in life
– An official holiday in Greece with just me & Dorothy
– Lot’s of other happy memories and moments with Dorothy
– Meeting up with Sharpy & Fearn
– Meeting up with Micha & Jenna
– A BBQ that ended with a waterfight
– Batman Live
– Became a coffee drinker
– Started to read a lot more
– The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and all the 25 year anniversary things that came with it
– A bunch of other great games like Ghost Trick, Super Mario 3D Land, Skyrim & Deus Ex
– Kenny’s Minecraft server
– First time carving pumpkins
– Youtube entertainment (Wheezy Waiter, Vlogbrothers, Roosterteeth)

THE BAD

– A ridicilous amount of train delays
– Small car accident (honestly it’s just my license plate that has a small bump in it now)
– Falling down an open staircase on a concrete floor, knocking my back out for a few weeks
– Had to throw up for the first time in years
– Accidentally deleting my youtube account

RESOLUTIONS 2012

Rather than doing resolutions this year, I’ve decided to go with a challenge list instead, which begins and will be uploaded January 2nd. The page is already up and can be found on the top.

IN CONCLUSION & THANKS

2011 for me was somewhat of a breakthrough. I was working for 5 years in the same place and I just felt I was going nowhere with it. I finally made up my mind and took a risk to try something else, and it has done me wonders. A lot of great stuff happened, and very little things that can be considered terribly bad happened (with the exception of nr. 3) so I consider myself very lucky.

I also want to thank Dorothy for being such a wonderful girlfriend. You’re caring, sweet, cute, silly, funny, beautiful and you’re always there for me. If it wasn’t for you I’d still feel lost and I wouldn’t be the person I am today. You’re one of the most important people in my life and I’m a lucky guy to have a girl like you love me. Thank you for all the happy moments and memories we’ve shared together, and I can’t wait to make more in 2012. And never forget, I love you very much! ❤

Lastly, I want to say extra thanks to all my online friends in particular. I know I say this every year, but that’s because I mean it and want to make sure you guys never forget or doubt me. No matter how far you live from me, no matter how little we sometimes speak, you guys will always be friends in my heart and mind, and will always be welcome for a visit if you can make it over here. Since I no longer have a job it’s not as easy to make it over like previous years, but count on it that I will do the best I can, if even for a short visit. You guys/girls are an important part of my life too, and you’re all partly responsible for the person I am today as well, and I’m truly & honestly gratefull for that.

Here’s to 2012, and in case the world really would end, we might as well make the best out of it right?!

Message

PS: I’ve also decided to activate my formspring account again for 2012, so feel free to go and ask questions there!

Love, Jin.

Mayor Dotour

A while ago I joined a Majora’s Mask collab on Deviantart and I just uploaded my submission today. Everyone had to draw a single character from the game, full body, no background. Point is to add them all together in one big picture but that wont happen for another few days, or possibly longer even. I picked Mayor Dotour, because mainly there weren’t many characters left to choose from anymore, but also because I’ve always sort of liked his design. He’s the Mayor of Clock Town, yet he looks like a jester and seems unable to handle his position when you enter his office in the game. In away his looks really represent his personality as well (also you have to dig that purple hair). Then again I’m not sure either how I would deal with the moon closing in on your town during the most busy time of the year. It’s also the first time I’ve just textures in my artwork and although I kept it simple in this case I quite like the outcome. I’m probably going to continue using this more to add that little extra to my characters.

Mayor Dotour

That’s it for today, I’ll be back with my last post early on Saturday as I can’t finish of this year without doing a “the good & the bad” list. However, since the day after New Year is the usual “family visiting day” it’s unlikely that I will be able to post, I’ll try but if not, I’ll definitely update the 2nd. Make sure to check back then as I’ll be posting and explaining my 2012 Challenge list! It will definitely make 2012 an interesting year and add so much more activity to this blog.

See you all on the last day of the year!
